History[]

The Most Special Place[]

Dinko gets tired of his home planet, Dunk and decides to go to Earth to find a special place where he can stand out. On his way, he passes through the Planet McBark and a native alien dog named Scruffy stows away on his ship. Dinko finds him and decides to keep him as his pet. The duo lands on Earth and find themselves in a young boy's backyard. The boy introduces himself as Tommy Cadle and allows them to sleep in his treehouse for the night.

The next day, Dinko and Scruffy continue their search for their new home. They first land near an Elvis museum and run into another alien named Flip, who offers them to take them on a tour of the museum. Unfortunately, they end up tripping the alarm and get chased out of the museum. Now joined by Flip, Dinko flies the gang to London and they meet another alien named Zuffy. Zuffy offers them a tour of the palace, but they end up getting kicked out again. The aliens go all over the world to find their new home, but they only end up damaging things and causing trouble.

The aliens fly back to Tommy’s place and play in his backyard, but they accidentally end up breaking his tire swing. Tommy forgives them and offers to let them live in his treehouse. The aliens agree and settle into their new home. On the last page, Dinko is seen on the moon rounding up other aliens to come to Earth.

Pet Alien[]

One night while relaxing in his bedroom, Tommy Cadle discovers a spaceship crashing into his lighthouse roof with five aliens: Dinko, Gumpers, Swanky, Scruffy and Flip. Terrified, Tommy tries to run away and falls off the lighthouse, but is saved by Dinko. The two form a friendship and the aliens beg Tommy to let them live with him in the lighthouse. After much pleading, Tommy agrees, but as long as they promise to let anyone else move in.

Dinko is the leader and biggest troublemaker of the alien gang. Though he and Gumpers always try to help Tommy, they always mess things up, often because Dinko misunderstands Tommy's words to the point of insanity, causing Tommy into trouble with the town, while the aliens get off scot-free. He serves as Tommy’s closest friend.

Appearance[]

Dinko is a small green dinosaur-like alien. He has golden-brown eyes, a large, bulbous snout, a spike on the back of his head, a dark blue spot on his stomach, four fingers on each hand and two-toed feet. He is the second shortest of the cast, being shorter than Gumpers, Swanky and Tommy, taller than Scruffy and around the same height as Flip. In the original toyline, he wore a purple and yellow striped scarf. His nose was also more sharp and pointy.

Personality[]

Dinko is a neurotic green alien with a fascination with Earth culture. He proclaims to be Tommy's best friend and always does what he can to help him out, although his attempts always backfire or get Tommy into a bigger mess. Despite his great intellect, Dinko always takes things literally and will misunderstand Tommy’s words to the point of insanity. Even when Tommy tells him not to help and nothing is wrong, Dinko never listens to him and does he wants instead. He is very clingy and possessive towards Tommy and gets very jealous if he ever feels like he’s going to be replaced as his best friend.

In the original pilot episode, Dinko was more calm, curious and naive than outright neurotic and childish.

Abilities[]

Dinko's most recurring ability is his intellect. Numerous episodes have him building inventions to help solve Tommy's problems. However, many of these inventions are poorly thought-out and often go wrong or make Tommy's problems worse.

In the original toy line, Dinko had super ricochetting powers, which he used to escape from evil scientists who wanted to capture him and the other aliens. This allows him to survive impacts that would severely injure or even kill him without a scratch. However, he is not invincible, reacting in agonized pain after being repeatedly stabbed by the primitive Granvilles in "Planet of the Granvilles". This ability only showed up twice in the show: "Escape from Detention X" and "The Beast That’s Stuck in My Foot."

Dinko is capable of extreme bursts of speed and strength. Many episodes have him running at ridiculously fast speeds without getting exhausted. In "The Horrible Workout of Evil", Dinko is strong enough to effortlessly pick up a gigantic boulder and throw it from The Lighthouse to Granville's mansion, which the boulder subsequently crushed.

In "Scare Affair", Dinko can perform extremely terrifying faces. His eyes also glow in the dark, allowing him to see in dark spaces.

In "The Time That Time Ended", Dinko can apparently breathe and even dance underwater.

Relationships[]

Dinko and Tommy are best friends. They have gone on various adventures together and will always work to help each other out of trouble. Dinko is very clingy towards Tommy and wants to be with him every second of the day. These attempts to make their bond stronger and improve Tommy’s life only end up making things worse, but Tommy never holds it against Dinko and always forgives him. However, Tommy does have his limits, and has snapped at Dinko whenever the latter goes too far with his stupidity ("Escape From Detention X", "The Alien Who Sold the World", "Uranus Awaits"). Despite this, the two do care for each other and view each other as best friends.

Gumpers and Dinko have a strong bond and are great friends. They always try to help Tommy with his problems, but since they constantly misunderstand his words, their attempts always make the problems worse than before. Whenever Dinko and Gumpers are confused about an Earth concept that Tommy told them about, Gumpers usually tries to advise him that maybe they should ask Tommy what he really meant, although Dinko usually ignores him.

Dinko doesn’t get along well with Swanky. In fact, their relationship is rather abusive and toxic. Swanky dislikes Dinko because of how hyperactive and childish he is, while Dinko dislikes Swanky because he’s a selfish jerk who never helps him out with anything. In one episode, when Swanky was getting beat up by Clinton, Dinko immediately ran off to "break out" Tommy from detention instead of helping Swanky. However, when Swanky leaves the lighthouse in two later episodes, they both mutually miss each other and are glad when Swanky decides to move back.

Dinko and Flip get along well. Throughout season one, Flip would often join Dinko and Gumpers on their exploits to help Tommy, although his involvement would get downplayed in the next season. In the pilot, Flip convinced Dinko and Scruffy to let him come with them on their journey around Earth.

Scruffy is Dinko’s pet dog. He loves him very much and they always play together. In the original pilot, Scruffy was a stowaway on Dinko’s ship and Dinko decided to keep him as a pet.
